Be An Inspiration Garrett Rust, fifth-grader St. Michael School winner of Division 2: grades 3-5 Be Intentional Hallie Williams, seventh-grader, John Paul II Academy, winner of Division 3: grades 6-8
Six short years ago, Julie Baum, a senior member of our team here at the Foun- dation, met a young Latina girl at an Open House at St. Edward School in Jef- fersontown. A very effective self-advocate, she told Julie that she wanted to start her seventh-grade year at St. Edward. She explained that her public middle school experience was not a good one, and she desperately wanted a change. In her words, "I really want to go to St. Edward, but we don't have the money. Can you help me?" So we went to work and did our thing, putting to- gether a tuition assistance package that allowed both her and her younger sis- ter to attend St. Edward School. But that was just the be- ginning. For the next two years, she shines like a star! Her studies improve, her friend- ships expand, her faith be- comes stronger and she is happier! As it were, we maintained contact with her and her family to see how things were going. In the fall of her eighth-grade year, we asked the age-old question, "Where do you want to go to high school?" Her immediate response - Mercy Academy. But she knew it couldn't happen. Even with Mer- cy's best tuition assistance award, it wouldn't be nearly enough for her family. She lamented in disappointment that her Catholic school dream was fading. And then Julie went to work again, negotiating with the school and finding a pri- vate benefactor who would supplement the $5,000 per year gap (the Foundation's tuition assistance funding generally stops after the eighth grade). Last May, this young Latina student graduated from her dream school, Mercy Academy. And this past fall, with the guidance and accompaniment of the Foundation staff, she joined the ranks of the freshman class in the business school at Bellarmine University. Four years from now, she will be a well-educated, am- bitious, bilingual and faith- filled woman who will take the world by storm and write her own script for success. What could be better? What seemed an unlikely pathway six years ago has changed this young woman's life - and that of her family - forever. Thanks to each and every one of our donors! Is Catholic school within your reach? At the Catholic Education Foundation, "The Answer is YES!!" Rich Lechleiter is the president of the Catholic Education Foundation of Louisville.
Winners announced in the annual CEF poster, essay contest
Record Staff Report
The Catholic Education Foundation has selected the winners of its annual Catho- lic Schools Week poster and essay contests. Participants, which in- cluded students in kinder- garten through high school, were asked to demonstrate through essays and posters how to "Be Intentional - Be Invitational - Be Inspira- tional." The winners of the poster contest, listed by division are: Kindergarten through second-grade division - Sa- die Didio, second grade, St. Michael School. Third- through fifth-grade - Garrett Rust, fifth grade, St. Michael School. Sixth- through eighth- grade - Hallie Williams, seventh grade, John Paul II Academy. Each of the poster contest winners received a $250 cash prize. William Patrick, a senior at Bethlehem High School in Bardstown, Ky., won the high school essay contest. The prize was a cash award of $1,000 and his essay can be read below. The contest winners were recognized at the Catholic Schools Week Mass Feb. 1 at St. Patrick Church. As a Catholic, it is my duty given from Christ to spread the word of God and to in- vite others into a relation- ship with Jesus, especially as a Catholic school student. In order to invite others into a relationship with Jesus, I must first have a relation- ship with him. At my school, senior re- treat played a vital role in deepening my relation- ship with God. It was here that I felt closest with God. Through bonding exercises with my classmates such as small group discussions and team-building activi- ties, prayers before and af- ter every meal, in the morn- ings, throughout the day and before bed, a relieving Reconciliation, Eucharistic Adoration, and many stories about life, I deepened and ex- panded my relationship with God. Through this retreat, I experienced pure joy. It was also at senior retreat that I learned how to talk about Jesus to other people and how to model my Catholic faith. I convinced my friend, a non-practicing Catholic, to reconnect his relationship with Jesus and to attend Rec- onciliation, his first Recon- ciliation since 2017. Through group talks and discussions, I demonstrated my faith in a way that was inspirational to him and he now goes to Mass regularly. Another example of a time that I have invited others into a relationship with Je- sus by modeling my Catho- lic faith is simply through attending Sunday Mass. Consistently going to Mass allows one to grow closer to Jesus and to find peace in one's self. By inviting my girlfriend to Mass for months in a row, it allowed us, especially her, to grow closer to Jesus and establish a relationship with him. It also helped in our relation- ship. After a short period of time, she told me that she wanted to become Catho- lic. She quickly went to see our religion teacher to talk about the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA) and went to his classroom after school once a week. In a few months, she joined the Church and became Catho- lic. We now go to Mass to- gether almost every Sunday. Finally, the National Catholic Youth Conference (NCYC) has helped improve my relationship with Christ. Through improving my re- lationship with him, I can model my faith and invite others into a relationship with Jesus. Before attending NCYC, I didn't know what to expect. Former teachers and students that had at- tended NCYC before told sto- ries about how moving the conference was. When I got there, I was able to see how many people were proud of their relationship with Jesus and the Catholic faith. My eyes were truly opened and I was stunned by the amount of people dedicated to model- ing their faith. When 10,000 people in Lucas Oil Stadi- um were dead silent during the Eucharistic Adoration, I knew Christ was truly pres- ent. This NCYC experience, along with senior retreat, motivated me to spread the word of Christ even more, and as a student at a Catho- lic school, it is especially my duty to model my faith and to invite others into a relation- ship with Jesus. William Patrick is a senior at Bethlehem High School.

Jesus' love is lived out in St. Aloysius through the amazing teachers and staff. I take just one religion class a day, but each teacher I have uses Jesus as an inspiration in their teaching styles, not just my religion teacher. They all want their classrooms to be safe places where we, the students, feel welcome. If I have a problem I know that I can go to any one of my teachers or even the teachers and staff that I do not have or see regularly. Each teacher has his or her own way of being an example for Jesus. - Meredith Feger, St. Aloysius School, eighth-grader ol,
