THE RECORD SEPTEMBER 12, 2019 SENIOR HEALTH & WELLNESS WWW.THERECORDNEWSPAPER.ORG B1
More than a hundred years ago, six women were invited to form an auxiliary to support the needs of the Sisters of the Good Shepherd. However, these ladies envi- sioned something of wider scope. They began to form a permanent organization - a society of women under Catholic auspices entrusted to support and serve humani- tarian and spiritual needs of the archdiocesan community. The Queen's Daugh- ters have been guided by their chosen patroness, the Blessed Mother Mary, ever since. These lay ministers be- gan their outreach efforts by focusing on visiting the home bound at Little Sisters of the Poor; being atten- tive to orphans and later to adoptive services by hous- ing infants and mothers; supporting Catholic educa- tion; and for a period, vol- unteers traveled to Camp Taylor to assist priests of- fering Mass for soldiers - then provided refreshments of coffee and donuts for the infantrymen. Today, they are involved in a variety of volunteer ac- tivities and support chari- table causes with fundraising events. MEMBERSHIP ACTIVITIES The organization prides itself on offering membership to women of any age, religion, or race. New members are welcomed and encouraged to join in active ministry. General meetings for members are scheduled three times a year. A Day of Re- flection retreat is offered in November. Social entertain- ment and luncheons include a game day in October and the Spring Fashion Show. The opportunity to honor our patroness is celebrated on Mary's Day in May. FUNDING AND GOVERNANCE The Queen's Daughters has been an impressive or- ganization since 1915. For over one hundred years the group has been governed by a volunteer Executive Board of Directors. There has never been a budget that included staff salaries. All income from fund rais- ing and contributions is ap- propriated to charitable giving. EVENTS AND GIVING Currently, the Fall Fun Fest and Spring Fashion Show are our primary fund- raisers. Volunteers plan and coordinate the benefits, which encourage opportuni- ties for social interaction as well as opportunities to earn needed proceeds. Financial giving supports the Mother-Infant Care Pro- gram at Catholic Charities; the Student Scholarship Aid Fund; Little Sisters of the Poor; Nazareth Home/Clif- ton; Nativity Academy; and St. Bernadette Diaper Bank. BECOME A MEMBER Open Enrollment to join Queen's Daughters is avail- able by contacting Maggie Hulsman, membership chair, at 222-4801 or Joyce Jen- nings, president, at 245-7603. You are invited to join us. May you answer with en- thusiasm as our founders did. Your presence will be a blessing to all.
