The 1,100 people who attended the 10th annual "Salute to THE GAME Luncheon" Sept. 28 at the Galt House Ho- tel in downtown Louisville, were among the first to hear about the Catholic Education Foundation's (CEF) newest endowment. "The Most Reverend Joseph E. Kurtz, D.D. Scholar- ship Fund," honors the archbishop for his service to the church, broader community and his contributions to the "growth and vitality" of Catholic education, said Richard A. Lechleiter, president of the CEF. Archbishop Kurtz celebrated his 10th anniversary as leader of the Archdiocese of Louisville Aug. 15. Under his leadership, tuition assistance for Catholic school students has grown significantly. Finding the best way of helping those in need, serving them so their dignity is hon- ored and doing so in a manner that doesn't create dependency proves to be a hard balance to strike, according to local service agencies. Catholic Charities of Louis- ville and some of its partners want to find that balance. To that end, they're inviting in- dividuals who do charitable service to attend "Reimagine Charity," an interactive seminar Nov . 4 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at St. Gabriel Church, 5505 Bardstown Road. There will always be the need for emergency assistance, said Deacon Lucio Caruso of Catholic Chartities, one of the dozens of ministries supported by the Catholic Services Appeal. But when the same people keep coming back for help "you real- ize you are not doing something as well as we should." This poses the question: Are "we helping or enabling?" he said. "This is not in any way about judging those in need or saying who's deserving or not. We really want to help in ways that honor their dignity. It's a core principle of Catholic social teaching." The seminar will be led by Jim Wehner, president of

Holy Trin- ity and St. Joseph were honored as Exemplary High Performing Schools, which have their state's highest achieving students - the top 15 percent - in English and mathematics as measured by the state, according to a news release from the Archdiocese of Louisville. This is the second time Holy Trinity has been recognized as a Blue Ribbon School. Holy Trinity was previously honored in 2007. This is the first Blue Ribbon dis- tinction for St. Joseph. Margaret Bowen, principal of St. Joseph, said the school com- munity is proud of this accom- plishment. "It takes a dedicated staff, the support of the parents and really good students all around" to earn a Blue Ribbon, she said during a phone interview. Though St. Joseph is situated
