As a musician, I have had the joy of participating in more Catholic weddings than I can count. Some- times the church is full of familiar faces and long-time parishioners. But more typ- ically, it is full of strangers. This is a wonderful thing. When a couple decides to marry in their parish, they often bring an eclectic array of guests from near and far. Some are Catholic, some are not. Some are experi- enced church-goers, some are not. In this respect, the wedding liturgy is a unique occasion to interact with people who might not otherwise be in our midst. It is an opportunity to be good hosts, to share our honored sacramental tra- ditions, and to allow space for God's grace to multiply. If your guest list includes lots of non-Catholics, it can be helpful to let them know what to expect. A Catholic wedding can be celebrated in the context of Mass or in the context of a liturgy of the Word of God, omitting Holy Communion. The lat- ter choice is most appropri- ate when one spouse is not Catholic, or if most attend- ees are not Catholic. Either way, the liturgy flows much like any other Mass or Lit- urgy of the Word, with the addition of a few key ele- ments. First, the bride and groom are asked a se- ries of questions, to make sure that each approach- es marriage freely and intends a lifelong union. Then, they exchange con- sent (the Church uses the term "consent" instead of "vows"), followed by some optional rites, such as the blessing and exchange of rings. Finally, the beautiful Nuptial Blessing calls down the Holy Spirit to seal and sanctify the covenant be- tween the new spouses. The exchange of consent and Nuptial Blessing are the critical elements of the sac- rament and therefore use specific texts that may not be altered. These are words that express our Catholic faith and bind us to one another and to God. One final point: A wed- ding liturgy is not just for the couple and their friends and family. Naturally, the invited guests are those who know the couple well, but a wedding, like all sac- raments of the Church, is a public witness to our Catho- lic faith. It is a reminder to the parish community of the importance of fam- ily and new life. The love between spouses is a sign of the love that Christ has for the Church and each of its members. To this end, it is important that the wed- ding appears in the parish calendar, that the couple is included in the prayers of the parish at Mass, and that the parish does its part to support the couple as members of the Christian community.
