Forever:The universal lens for marriage
By DEACON STEPHEN BOWLING The more I speak and write about marriage, the more I am uplifted. The Holy Spirit is every- where. The eyes, hearts and voices of couples preparing for marriage are filled with it. So many seem to have an innate desire for this pre- cious something they have yet to experience. And some- how they still know exactly what it is they seek. In a word, it's forever. In the Archdiocese of Louisville's Foundations for Marriage program, we often prepare close to 400 couples every year for marriage in the church. When facilitat- ing the program, I often ask couples to raise their hands if they believe this to be their "starter" marriage. Of course no hands go up, and heads jerk to look into the faces of the fianc sitting next to them. They get the joke and so should we. It has often been said that marriage is not for the faint of heart. I believe this to be a true statement, although not for what the passage appears to say. The ad- age should not be taken to shame the weak-willed or the timid. The term "faint of heart" simply refers to those unable to forever commit themselves to someone else. It is a daunting proposal after all. Forever is the uni- versal lens for understanding marriage, a gift given to us freely by God from the very beginning. As one of God's most beau- tiful gifts, marriage deserves constant reverence and care. Not as something laid upon a shelf to gaze at, but as the relational oxygen we choose to breathe for the rest of our lives. Marriage is active, not passive. And it is for certain a forever intention. Thanks to the Holy Spirit, so many couples seeking it today un- derstand this. Never before have I been so filled with hope for our future. Deacon Stephen Bowling is the director of the Office of Family Ministries.
